As part of our ongoing anti-Black racism work, we are hosting our 3rd annual Black History Month event. This event brings together Board trustees, students, staff and members of the African, Caribbean and Black identifying (ACBi) community for an opportunity to learn from each other, make connections, build relationships, and celebrate together.

This year’s theme is “Black Brilliance: Embracing History and Ourselves,” with Keynote Speaker Natasha Henry, current president of the Ontario Black History Society. She is completing a Ph.D. in History at York University, researching the enslavement of African people in early Ontario. Through her various professional, academic, and community roles, Natasha’s work is grounded in her commitment to research, collect, preserve, and disseminate the histories of Black Canadians.

Natasha will be speaking about the #BlackedOutHistory campaign, an initiative aiming to raise awareness of how little Black history is taught in Canadian schools and is calling on the provincial and federal governments to update the education curriculum.

The evening also includes WRDSB student voice submissions and a student panel moderated by Black Brilliance Advisory Council member, Abena Peprah.
