April 5th, 2024
April is Spring into Spring month! This year, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), in partnership with Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region (STSWR) and Ontario Active School Travel, will be participating in Spring into Spring.
Spring is the perfect time to get active outdoors and brush off the winter blues! Walking, biking and wheeling to and from school:
- Creates a joy of fitness
- Increases alertness in the classroom
- Inspires social connection
Exploring alternatives to vehicle transportation not only boosts well-being, it:
- Helps reduce fossil fuel emissions
- Creates a safe active transportation environment around WRDSB schools
While this is only one month of action, we hope it inspires many to choose active travel more often despite the unpredictable Spring weather. We hope these efforts will have a ripple effect throughout the rest of the school year, and into the future.
We all have a part in building schools and communities that support all forms of transportation. Walking, biking or wheeling are safe, healthy choices for students and families making the journey to school.
Don’t forget to tag us on Twitter/X at @wrdsb or Instagram at @wr_dsb and use the hashtag #SpringIntoSpring. We want to reshare your stories and posts!
How You Can Participate
All WRDSB students, staff and families are welcome to participate in Spring into Spring! As an added bonus, students can register how many days and how far they walk or wheel for a chance to win 1 of 5 $20 Indigo gift cards. If this is something that your child would be interested in, please fill out the Student Registration form by April 30, 2024.
What about remote learners, bus students or students who get a drive?
These students can participate, too!
Students who ride the bus are encouraged to walk to and from their bus stops. Remote learners are encouraged to take some time throughout their day to walk around their neighbourhood. Students who are usually driven are encouraged to walk from a few blocks away.
