Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behaviour and create global, national, and local policy changes.

This year, we would like to invite all students and staff to participate and share their actions to spark further discussion and interest in planet earth and sustainability.

Get Involved

Students across the WRDSB are invited to participate on April 22, 2021.

Earth Day can be spent in any number of ways. The event is held annually on April 22, 2021 as a symbol of commitment to leading the change to a more sustainable lifestyle and relationship with the planet. This year, with our schools in Learn at Home, Earth Day will look different, but there are still many actions that can be taken virtually.

Activities may include:

  • Having students identify various species around their home or neighbourhood. (iNaturalist App is good to track local species)
  • Calculating your Greenhouse Gas footprint using Project Neutrals calculator at https://app.projectneutral.org/
  • Participating in Earth Day Canada’s social media campaign through #EarthDay

The Backyard Bird Count

The Outdoor and Environmental Education Department has something fun for students to do this Earth Day, with the launch of their second Backyard Bird Count. Counting birds can be done easily from a backyard, balcony or window. With a few simple resources, everyone can enjoy a bit of nature this Earth Day and do something to help Waterloo Region’s beautiful birds.

Share Your Earth Day Adventure

Share how you’re marking Earth Day – post your Earth Day stories on social media, and tag us on Twitter at @wrdsb or on Instagram at @wr_dsb so we can amplify and celebrate the WRDSB’s total impact. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #EarthDay.

Thank you for supporting our environment and building strong school communities.
