The weather is warming up in Waterloo Region, and all across North America. Please note how we are responding to support the health and well-being of students and staff in Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) schools.

Prioritizing Student Safety and Well-being

As we respond to extreme heat conditions, the safety and well-being of students and staff is at the heart of our focus.

We continue to work with Region of Waterloo Public Health and are closely monitoring any guidance they provide. We are prepared to follow their recommendations as we continue through this period of high temperatures.

Procedures for High Temperatures

Staff have been provided with information and guidance to help them continue to support student learning, while mitigating the impact of high temperatures. They are guided by the following procedures:

Supporting Your Well-being During Extreme Heat Conditions

When temperatures are warmer it takes less time to develop heat-related illnesses. Heat illnesses include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps (muscle cramps), heat edema (swelling of hands, feet and ankles), and heat rash. Read more about the symptoms of heat illness.

You can protect yourself from heat and humidity by:

  • Knowing the weather forecast before going outside
  • Planning ahead and modifying your plans according to the weather
  • Drinking plenty of cool liquids, especially water, before you feel thirsty
  • Wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric
  • Seeking shade and avoiding sun exposure
  • Taking a break from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place
  • Blocking the sun by closing curtains or blinds during the day
  • Preparing meals that don’t require the stove

We are committed to ensuring that all WRDSB students experience a safe and supportive learning environment as we make our way towards the end of the school year.
